Program description

Search Duplicate Files is a utility designed to search for duplicate files within a selected directory. The user can search for particular file extensions such as MP3 or JPG with the file filters.

There are three different searches that vary in search method. The first one only compares the file names of all the files within the directory, the second compares the file name and file size of all the files within the directory and the last one compares the file contents to find duplicate copies. The first one that searches by file name is faster than the others and the file contents search is the slower because it more thorough.

Functions

Scan

To find duplicate files, click Scan from the File menu and select the directory or drive that you want to scan for duplicate files. It is not recommended to scan a large amount of files simultaneously. The speed will depend on the computers speed and the amount of files in the selected directory.

You can search with 3 different search engines:
File name only (Fast – not thorough)
File name and file size
File contents (Slow - thorough)

The files that match the condition will be displayed by their filename in alphabetical order.

Rescan

This will rescan the last selected directory.

Open File

To open a file, select the file from the list of duplicate files and click Open file. It will open the file in its usual program.

Rename File

To rename a file, select the file from the list of duplicate files and click Rename; file then enter in the new file name in the text box.

Delete File

This will delete all the selected file. To select more than one file use the Ctrl key to individually select other files.

WARNING: Once a file is deleted with Search Duplicate Files, it is permanently deleted from the storage device and it has not been moved to the Recycle Bin.

Save List

This will save the list of duplicate files to a selected text or CSV file.

Filters

The search can be refined by selecting one of the following file extensions, to scan a particular file type: *.*, *.mp3, *.mp4,*.wav, *.jpg, *.bmp, *.gif, *.png, *.doc, *.exe, *.mov, *.wmv, *.mpg, *.mpeg, *.avi, *.pdf and *.zip.

Installation

Unzip the files to a selected directory.

Run the file called Search Duplicate Files.exe

MS .net framework 1.1 or higher must be installed.
