Why is Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) called Asymmetric? |
It is called asymmetric because more bandwidth is reserved for receiving data than for sending data. This is useful because many users of the Internet receive much more data than they send. |
Besides the high-speed advantage, ADSL connection is always on. There is no longer a need to log on and off, no more busy signals and no more waiting for the connection to establish - it is always there. On top of these, you can use the phone even when the data connection is on. You do not need to switch between surfing the Net and talking over the phone. |
USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. It is a new peripheral bus standard developed by PC and Telecom leaders. It allows connection for low to medium speed computer peripherals. USB features high throughput I/O transfer rate of 12Mbit/sec and support up to 127 devices. |
At ADSL speeds, the limitations depend on the performance or load of the ADSL Service Provider that you are trying to reach, as well as the line condition specific to your location. |
ADSL modems can be damaged by thunderstorms. Our product warranty does not apply to damage caused by lightning. If your area frequently experiences thunderstorms, you are advised to use a surge protector. Certain surge protectors have been reported to reduce download speed, so you are advised to test your speed before and after installation to make sure that it adds no problems to your line. |
Do I need to install additional telephone lines in order
to use ADSL? |
No, you do not need to do this. ADSL and standard voice telephones operate at different sets of frequencies. The difference in frequencies allows both IP (Internet) traffic and voice traffic to co-exist on the same physical phone line. |
Yes. A limitation comes in only when the ADSL line is used to view video-on-demand or other memory and processor hungry applications. Your old PC may be too slow in such cases. |
Run the diagnostics that comes with your modem package. i. Ensure that your modem is powered on. ii. On your Windows desktop, double-click on the USB DSL Test icon. iii.
Click TEST.
Allow some time for the tests to progress. If you see a red colour box for INTERFACE and/or MODEM
tests, this means that you have not installed your modem driver
properly. Alternatively, you may click LOG for the possible reason(s) for the failure. iv.
For
information on the colour legend, click HELP. |
How can I send/receive fax as
well as surf the Internet at the same time? |
To send/receive fax, you may connect your fax machine to the TEL jack via a Micro-Filter, similar to the Telephone Set connection as illustrated in Step 2 of the Installation Guide. |
Do I need to use a Micro-Filter when using ADSL (For Annex A users)? |
Micro-Filters are required if you are sharing your ADSL line with your telephone. The Micro-Filter will eliminate noise on the telephone line to ensure the best possible phone performance. If the ADSL uses a different line and not sharing with your Telephone Set, then a Micro-Filter will not be necessary. For connection to the Micro-Filter, you may refer to Page 4 of the Installation Guide. |
How do I know if my modem driver has been installed successfully? |
Run the diagnostics USB DSL Test on your Windows desktop to verify. Alternatively, carry out the following steps: For Windows 98 / 98 SE / Windows Me
For Windows XP
If you see an exclamation mark besides the Network Adapter device, it means that you did not install your driver successfully. Click on the device and click Uninstall / Remove. |
|
By default, the DSLMON icon
is added onto your system tray once you have successfully installed the modem
driver. |
How do I monitor the performance of my modem? |
i.
Once the
driver has been properly installed, you will see the DSLMON icon ii. Double-click on the icon. It displays the DSL Status as well as the transmit and receive rates. |
How do I change the default VPI/VCI values as well as the encapsulation type? |
|
To remove your modem driver, click Start > Programs > ADSL USB MODEM > Uninstall or double click My Computer> Control Panel> Add/Remove Program> ADSL USB MODEM. Disconnect your Modem. |
